Over the last few years, an area of empty buildings and land in Stourbridge’s Old Quarter has fallen into disrepair, marring the otherwise pleasant residential environment. The land and buildings, known as the Longlands Site, are owned by Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMET) and Dudley Council.
After concerned residents contacted Margot about the vandalism and arson attacks that had been afflicting the area, Margot spearheaded a campaign to develop the site. Following meetings with key staff at BMET, Margot secured a commitment from the College to clear the site of rubbish and debris. She has also worked with police and the College’s security staff to implement a plan to reduce anti-social behaviour on the site.
Throughout the process Margot has kept in contact with the local community through a series of public meetings, and has made sure to bring local residents’ views before BMET and the Council. At the most recent meeting, residents were able to vote on three proposals on how the space could be renovated.
